Title:

ABC No Rio Records Archive

Dates:

1974-2002

Abstract:

Many of the records are standard files, many are not. The records connect the following inter related components of the No Rio archives:

MEDIA ARCHIVES
Audio tapes and moving images in 16mm, super 8, and regular 8 film registers. Video is archived as camera original, and video migrated from pre existing film registers, as well as from previous video formats such as Sony Portapac reels, and VHS, 3/4", and Hi 8 cassette. Some items represent titles of moving image works. Other examples are elements comprising those works, including the moving images created as elements of performance, installation, and multimedia works. In many cases the items are created as documentation of performances, exhibitions, forums, meetings, and events related to the history of the organization and its influence.

and

VISUAL ART
Generally but not exclusively consisting of collaboratively generated art and agitprop created on site for social and political theme-driven exhibitions and events at ABC No Rio.

The ABC No Rio Records Archive

Historical/Bibliographical Note

The early archives (roughly 1981-1983) are largely implemented by artist members of Collabortive Projects, Inc. (CoLab), the organization’s founding movement. Beginning in 1983 the records are compiled generated archives. It should be noted that CoLab deliberately distanced itself from ABC No Rio for perceived legal reasons - The Real Estate Show was an extra-legal action that CoLab members felt important not to jeopardize the corporation's legal standing. At the time, ABC No Rio was not a legal entity. The facility given to the artists was leased to an individual artist (Rebecca Howland) - Hence the work in this collection itself is the locus where the two groupings connect. From roughly 1983 – 1995 the archives were then maintained with additional compilation of materials under the direction of Peter Cramer and Jack Waters under the auspices of ABC No Rio’s fiscal management, the multi purpose collectively artist-run umbrella organization Allied Productions, Inc.

Scope and Content Note

The records archive includes photographs, color slides, posters, flyers, announcements, press releases, magazine articles, reviews, grant proposals, business files, artworks, and correspondences inclusive of creative project planning, scheduling records, various notes, promotional materials. The archive was built and preserved by Steven Englander from materials preserved, compiled and maintained by Alan Moore, Peter Cramer, and Jack Waters. Because of No Rio’s history as an entirely artist-run organization, there is frequently an overlap of what constitutes administrative documentation and what might be defined as artwork. While conscious of traditional practices, No Rio's critical stance on recognized standards is reflected in its actions, including how activities, events and materials are produced. Further emphasis should be placed on the fluidity of the inter-relationship between legal entities such as CoLab, Allied Productions, Inc., and such unincorporated constructs as the Naked Eye Cinema which originated as “an extension of ABC No Rio’s film program,” while functioning as an autonomous activity well beyond the physical boundaries of No Rio’s Rivington Street facility. Several key artist-managers were active under the rubric of these groupings in simultaneity. Awareness of the flexibility of boundaries and divisions, and the linkages between the activities of these entities are crucial to understanding the nature of the archives they generated.

Arrangement

The Archive is arranged in a series of 11 Boxes and 6 Flat Boxes. The Boxes are arranged in using folders.
